Federico Barocci was an Italian Renaissance painter and printmaker. His original name was Federico Fiori, and he was nicknamed Il Baroccio. His work was highly esteemed and influential, and foreshadows the Baroque works of Rubens. He is generally considered the greatest and most individual painter of his time in central Italy.

Paintings by Federico Barocci

Madonna del Popolo (Barocci) (1579)

The Madonna del Popolo is an oil on wood painting by Italian painter Federico Barocci, created in 1575-1579. It depicts the Madonna and the works of mercy. It is signed and dated FEDERICVS BAROTIVS VRBINAS MDLXXIX. It is held in the Uffizi, in Florence. The work had initially been commissioned by the Fraternita dei laici of Arezzo to Giorgio Vasari, as an altarpiece for the fraternity's chapel in Santa Maria della Pieve. In 1574, upon Vasari's death, the task was entrusted to Barocci, who worked on it until 1579 (the date affixed by the artist in the panel). The theme initially commissioned was the Mystery of Mercy, but the artist himself proposed a change.

Nativity (Barocci) (1597)

The Nativity is an oil on canvas painting by Italian painter Federico Barocci, created in 1597. It depicts the episode of the Nativity of Jesus. It is now in the Museo del Prado, in Madrid. The painting was commissioned and executed in 1597 for Francesco Maria II Della Rovere, Duke of Urbino. Some years later he was asked for the artist, probably with the purpose of a commission, by the ambassador Bernardo Maschi on behalf of the Spanish queen Margaret of Austria. Knowing about the artist's slowness but still wanting to please the queen, the duke decided to donate the work in his possession, which therefore went to Spain, in 1605. Queen Margaret appreciated the gift, defining the canvas as "very cheerful and devout". Barocci had made a copy in a slightly larger format, c. 1599, and presumably kept it in his study in the Archbishop's Palace. He said it was one of his most precious belongings. The original painting ended up in the Prado and the replica is now in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, in Milan.

Madonna of the Cat (Barocci) (1575)

Madonna of the Cat or Madonna del gatto is an oil on canvas painting by Italian painter Federico Barocci, created c. 1575. It is held in the National Gallery of London. The painting was made for Count Antonio Brancaleoni of Piobbico. Engravings of the painting appeared by 1577.

Communion of the Apostles (Barocci) (1603)

The Communion of the Apostles, or Institution of the Eucharist is a painting of the Last Supper by Federico Barocci located at Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome. It was commissioned for the family chapel of Pope Clement VIII Aldobrandini and completed between 1603 and 1608. It was most likely the sight of Barocci's Presentation of the Virgin in the Chiesa Nuova at its unveiling in 1603 that led to the commission of the Communion four months later. On 13 August 1603 the pope communicated with the minister to Francesco Maria II della Rovere, duke of Urbino, Giacomo Sorbolongo, about acquiring an altarpiece from Barocci. At this time the Cavaliere d'Arpino was the pope's most important artist; the letter goes on to ask that d'Arpino not be told of the commission.

Rest on the Flight into Egypt (Barocci) (1570)

Rest on the Flight into Egypt is an oil on canvas painting by Italian painter Federico Barocci, created c. 1573. It is held in the Pinacoteca Vaticana. The painting depicts an episode from the early life of Jesus, the Rest on the Flight into Egypt, a usual subject in Catholic art. The scene is shown from a simple and familiar point of view so as to invite devotion among the faithful. In the center, the Virgin Mary, who is seated, draws water. Behind her, Joseph holds out a branch with a few cherries from a tree to Jesus. The straw hat, the flask, the food bag and the donkey, at the right, contribute to create an atmosphere of intimacy. The presence of cherries, however, are a symbol prefiguring the Passion of Christ.

Portrait of a Young Woman (1570)
